{"id":10946,"date":"2015-03-23T08:31:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-23T08:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/viewmyprojects.com\/winwirewp\/?p=10946"},"modified":"2023-11-29T14:13:27","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T14:13:27","slug":"conflict-management-techniques","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/viewmyprojects.com\/winwirewp\/blog\/conflict-management-techniques\/","title":{"rendered":"Conflict Management Techniques: Pros and Cons of It"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When we say \u201cConflict\u201d, the first word comes to our mind is Fight, Avoid, Anger, Lose, Pain, Control, War, Hate, Impasse, Loss, Destruction, Bad, Fear, Wrong doing, Mistake etc., As you can see, conflicts is almost universally perceived as a negative occurrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I shared in my <a href=\"https:\/\/viewmyprojects.com\/winwirewp\/blog\/conflict-management-resolution-techniques\/\">last blog post<\/a> that a conflict is a situation when the interests, needs, goals or values of involved parties interfere with one another. A conflict is a common phenomenon in the workplace. Different stakeholders may have different priorities; conflicts may involve team members, departments, projects, organization and client, boss and subordinate, organization needs vs. personal needs. Often, a conflict is a result of perception. Is conflict a bad thing? Not necessarily. Often, a conflict presents opportunities for improvement. Therefore, it is important to understand (and apply) various conflict resolution techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conflict Management Techniques<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Conflict Management Techniques is the practice of recognizing and dealing with disputes in a rational, balanced and effective way. Following are the techniques one needs to apply based on the circumstances. Techniques should be evaluated and applied based on the own needs vs others needs<br>\u2022 Collaborating &#8211; I win, you win<br>\u2022 Compromising &#8211; Win some, lose some (You bend, I bend)<br>\u2022 Accommodating &#8211; I lose, you win<br>\u2022 Competing &#8211; I win, you lose<br>\u2022 Avoiding &#8211; No winners, No losers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post I am going to discuss the pros and cons of these techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/viewmyprojects.com\/winwirewp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Conflict-Management-Techniques-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viewmyprojects.com\/winwirewp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Conflict-Management-Techniques-1.webp 738w, https:\/\/viewmyprojects.com\/winwirewp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Conflict-Management-Techniques-1-300x163.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Conflict Management Techniques<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Collaborating (I win, you win)<\/strong><br>Collaboration involves an attempt to work with the other person to find a win-win solution to the problem in hand &#8211; the one that most satisfies the concerns of both parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pros:<br>\u2022 Leads to solving the actual problem<br>\u2022 Leads to a win-win outcome<br>\u2022 Reinforces mutual trust and respect<br>\u2022 Builds a foundation for effective collaboration in the future<br>\u2022 Shared responsibility of the outcome<br>\u2022 You earn the reputation of a good negotiator<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cons:<br>\u2022 Collaborating may not be practical when timing is crucial and a quick solution or fast response is required<br>\u2022 Requires a commitment from all parties to look for a mutually acceptable solution<br>\u2022 The process takes lots of time and energy<br>\u2022 Some may take advantage of other people&#8217;s trust and openness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Compromising (Win some, lose some)<\/strong><br>Compromising looks for an expedient and mutually acceptable solution which partially satisfies both parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pros:<br>\u2022 Faster issue resolution. Compromising may be more practical when time is a factor<br>\u2022 Can provide a temporary solution while still looking for a win-win solution<br>\u2022 Lowers the levels of tension and stress resulting from the conflict<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cons:<br>\u2022 Important values and long-term objectives can be derailed in the process<br>\u2022 May require close monitoring and control to ensure the agreements are met<br>\u2022 May not work if initial demands are too great<br>\u2022 Does not contribute to building trust in the long run<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Accommodating\/Smoothing (I lose, you win)<\/strong><br>Accommodating the concerns of other people first of all, rather than one&#8217;s own concerns<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pros:<br>\u2022 In some cases smoothing will help to protect more important interests while giving up on some less important ones<br>\u2022 Gives an opportunity to reassess the situation from a different angle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cons:<br>\u2022 There is a risk to be abused, i.e. the opponent may constantly try to take advantage of your tendency toward smoothing\/accommodating.<br>\u2022 May negatively affect your confidence in your ability to respond to an aggressive opponent<br>\u2022 It makes it more difficult to transition to a win-win solution in the future<br>\u2022 Some of your supporters may not like your smoothing response and be turned off<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Competing (I win, you lose)<\/strong><br>Also known as forcing. An individual firmly pursues his or her own concerns despite the resistance of the other person. When goals are extremely important, one must sometimes use power to win<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pros:<br>\u2022 May provide a quick resolution to a conflict<br>\u2022 Increases self-esteem and draws respect when firm resistance or actions were a response to an aggression or hostility<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cons:<br>\u2022 May negatively affect your relationship with the opponent in the long run<br>\u2022 May cause the opponent to react in the same way, even if the opponent did not intend to be forceful originally<br>\u2022 Can escalate conflict<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Avoiding \/ Withdrawing (No winners, no losers)<\/strong><br>Avoids conflict by withdrawing, sidestepping, or postponing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pros:<br>\u2022 When the opponent is forcing \/ attempts aggression, you may choose to withdraw and postpone your response until you are in a more favorable circumstance for you to push back<br>\u2022 Withdrawing is a low stress approach when the conflict is short<br>\u2022 Gives the ability\/time to focus on more important or more urgent issues instead<br>\u2022 Gives you time to better prepare and collect information before you act<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cons:<br>\u2022 Important decisions may be made by default<br>\u2022 Postponing may make matters worse<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When we say \u201cConflict\u201d, the first word comes to our mind is Fight, Avoid, Anger, Lose, Pain, Control, War, Hate, Impasse, Loss, Destruction, Bad, Fear, Wrong doing, Mistake etc., As you can see, conflicts is almost universally perceived as a negative occurrence.
